No-till farming answer to the global hunger

0

HOSHANGABAD: Aamir Khan, recently on his show " Satyamev Jayate" spoke about the harmful effects of pesticides and requested the Central and the state governments to adopt organic farming method. Waking up to the cries of farmers, Aamir has put forward a solution, which surely will bring back life to our agricultural fields.
Providing testimony to Aamir's claim is a farm in Madhya Pradesh that proudly flaunts its fertile expanse of 12 acres and the unique method that can help overcome the suicidal trend among the farmers of the state, perhaps of the country. The sole but strong characteristic of the Titus Farm that differentiates it from the rest is the use of natural methods to grow, to let grow.
Three kilometres from Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, on the road to Bhopal, lies the Titus Farm where for the last twenty five years, a unique experiment of natural farming is being done here by a local farmer, Raju Titus, who abandoned traditional plough-based and chemical methods of farming in his farms. He favours farming without tillage, known as "No-Till" farming. By doing so, Raju attracted the attention of people who come from across the country to see the experiments he has done with natural farming.
In November last year, three farmers committed suicide in Hoshangabad. Perturbed by the suicides, Raju feels that days of chemical farming are over. Excess use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and unnecessary tillage of the land leaves soil susceptible to erosion and leads to agricultural runoff.
Irrigation by Tawa Dam created hope initially, but now, the dream has been transformed into a nightmare. This year, the crop of Soybean in Hoshangabad was completely destroyed, producing only two quintal of soybean per acre. In such situations, alternative farming is what we need to think of. Farmers disappointed with all the "revolutionary" methods of cultivating crops are attracted towards this promising idea of natural farming.
One part of his farm, where wheat has already been sown, is covered with Green Ground Cover made of weeds. Here, Raju has covered the field with paddy straw along with Gajar Ghass (Carrot Grass). Once the sunlight reaches the seeds, filtered by the green ground cover, the young wheat saplings will grow out, celebrating life.
Proud of his experiments, Raju shares, "Covering the fields with weeds and grass gives birth to microbes, earthworms and insects which bore holes in the soil and make it softer and porous. It collectively increases the fertility of the soil, resulting in a good harvest."
Natural farming increases the fertility of the soil, whereas in chemical farming, it is on a constant decline, till there comes a point when the soil is rendered completely infertile. The organic fertilizer, the carbon, formed inside the soil is lost in the air after tillage as the soil's organic matter is broken down more rapidly. This increases the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere, thus contributing to the global warming. A no-tillage technique gives hope for a solution to a worrying global problem.
Raju Titus has 13.5 acres of land, of which twelve acres are used for farming. On eleven of this 12-acre farm, there is a dense forest of Subbool (Australian Agesia) which is a type of fodder for the animals and a good source of wood. Only one acre is used for agricultural purposes, that too without following the popular practices.
Raju's farming is dictated by his requirement, not by what the market requires. He explains, "One acre of land is sufficient for our need. We get foodgrains, fruits, milk and vegetables from it, which is sufficient for the need of our family. We sow wheat in winter, corn and green gram in summer and paddy in rain."
The steps he is following for the last twenty-five years are of a famous Japanese agricultural scientist Masanobu Fukuoka, who practiced natural farming for years and wrote a book 'One Straw Revolution'. This natural agricultural practice is also believed to be popular in the United States of America.
Typically considered to be the enemy of the crops, weeds are the backbone of natural farming. Raju has developed a friendly relationship with the weeds as they create the green zones in the field. When asked if these plants harm the crops, Raju replies, "Not at all," adding, "The roots of these plants and trees go deep thus strengthening the soil. The crops grow well under the shades of trees and plants. It also depends on how fertile your land is. Since our lands are fertile, the shade of trees doesn't adversely affect the crops."
It is natural to believe that no-till farming is tough. People who hear of the methods adopted as a part of this natural farming usually tend to disbelieve. But seeing Raju's farm, the sceptics come away convinced.
Natural farming is a way of life. It is an idea that can wipe out hunger as well as give life to other living beings and organisms. It provides pure air and water, creating equilibrium in the environment. It is called Rishi farming, named after the natural lifestyle of the Rishis whose intake comprised roots, fruits and milk. They grew high productivity food grains on a very small patch of land. They only sowed as much as they required, and no more. And natural farming showed the way.
The Charkha Development Communication Network feels that perhaps the answers to global hunger lie in this earthy solution. By Baba Mayaram (ANI)

Farmers need not wait for monsoon to start sowing under this method
“In our culture, innovation is dubbed as craziness, but our success lies in identifying more 'crazy' people so that the innovation revolution can spread across the country. The present generation is fast losing out on scientific knowledge. In the last several years we are losing many such affordable scientific knowledge due to sheer neglect,” says Prof K. Anil Gupta, Vice Chairman, National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad.
Lack of support
“Funds crunch, lack of adequate assistance from government officials and private sector firms, and lack of awareness among people are the main deterrents in identifying such rural innovations as a national movement,” adds Prof Anil, who calls for considerable more interest from science and technology institutions in validating, value adding in people-driven knowledge and innovations.
Besides being cost-effective and eco-friendly, these potential scientific discoveries need to be commercialised and even exported, adds Prof Anil.
Source of idea
Take the example of a simple farmer Ram Abhilash Patel from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Ram developed a concept of sowing paddy seeds inserted in clay pellets. The farmer claims that he got this idea from within the household.
“I noticed that children made clay pellets for playing and used to throw them away. Suddenly during monsoon, I used to notice a small seedling growing from the wet pellet.
“This inspired me to try using the same method for growing paddy,” he explains.
Finding the right kind of clay soil posed a problem. Other soil types tend to break under pressure while pushing the paddy seeds into them.
Germinate well
The seeds can be easily inserted inside clay and remain safe during sowing and later germinate well.
Pond or river soil is mixed thoroughly with 3-4 paddy seeds to make small balls of pellets. The pellets are made during April - May and dry within 2-3 hours.
“Pond soil is very fertile and helps in minimizing weeds,” explains Mr. Patel. The farmer is practising this method for the last 15 years and impressed by it, many others in the region are doing the same.
“The pellets can be sown manually or by using a seed drill. Rows are made facing east to west or vice-versa so that the germinating plant gets ample air and sunlight. This method saves both time and money and the need to prepare a nursery for paddy plants does not arise,” he says.
By adopting the conventional nursery method, paddy crops take approximately 160 days to mature while using this technique it takes only about 145 days.
Waiting time reduced
Farmers need not wait for monsoon to start sowing under this method. As pond/ river soil, is fertile, the dependence on fertilizers is reduced and as the seeds are in a mud shell they are protected from birds etc. The process also saves water as no standing water is needed in the field.
Better output
“Most importantly, the output gets maximized by this method. Mr. Ram Abhilash proved experimentally by cultivating paddy in a field by all three methods namely pellet, nursery, and direct sowing. The paddy production using these methods was 1.7, 1.5 and 1.4 tonnes respectively,” says Prof Anil.
Though some products are being commercially manufactured and exported, there are millions of ideas such as Mr. Ram's, waiting for assistance in terms of funds, technical and design support.

Inspired by Japanese agricultural scientist Masanobu Fukuoka, Raju Titus has taken to ‘no-till farming' and flaunting the results

Three kilometres from Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, on the road to Bhopal, is situated the Titus Farm that proudly flaunts its fertile expanse of 12 acres and a unique farming method that can potentially help overcome the worrying suicidal trend among farmers of the State, and perhaps of the country. The sole but strong characteristic of the farm that differentiates it from the rest is the use of natural methods to grow and to let grow.
For the last 25 years, a unique experiment of natural farming is being practised here by a local farmer, Raju Titus, who abandoned traditional plough-based and chemical methods of farming in his farms. He favours farming without tillage, known as “No-Till” farming. By doing so, Raju attracted the attention of people who comes from across the country to see his experiments with natural farming.
The unfortunate incident of farmer suicides that had jolted the nation in recent years has not yet come to a halt, even though it has lost visibility in the media. In November last year, three farmers committed suicide in Hoshangabad. Perturbed by the suicides, Raju feels that days of chemical farming are over. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and unnecessary tillage of the land leaves soil susceptible to erosion and leads to agricultural runoff.
Irrigation by water from the Tawa dam had raised hope initially, but now, the dream has been transformed into a nightmare. This year, the soybean crop in Hoshangabad was completely destroyed — producing only two quintal of soybean per acre. In such situations, alternative farming is what one needs to think of. Farmers disappointed with the “revolutionary” methods of cultivating crops are attracted towards this promising idea of natural farming.
Equal contribution in his experiments comes from his wife who, along with a young worker, is painstakingly levelling weeds on the farm with a crimper roller. One part of the farm, where wheat has already been sown, is covered with green ground cover of paddy straw along with gajar ghass (carrot grass). Once the sunlight reaches the seeds, filtered by the green ground cover, the young wheat saplings will grow out, celebrating life.
Proud of his experiments, Raju shares, “Covering the fields with weeds and grass gives birth to microbes, earthworms and insects which bore holes in the soil and make it softer and porous. It collectively increases the fertility of the soil, resulting in a good harvest.” He disapproves of chemical farming for several reasons. In chemical farming, water that is filled in the paddy field doesn't go deep inside the soil while in natural farming water penetrates deep, increasing the level of water. Under the green cover reside many insects which can easily foil attacks from insects harmful for the crop.
According to him, tilling the field, which entails weed removal, contours the soil into rows to plant and dig channels for irrigation — leading to adverse effects like loss of organic matter, death of soil microbes and soil erosion where topsoil is washed away. Every year, rainwater washes away some fertile soil leaving behind parched fields. The result: debt traps, since farmers are forced to fall back on the desperate measure of relying on chemical fertilisers.
This increases the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere, thus contributing to global warming. A no-tillage technique gives hope for a solution to a worrying global problem.
Raju owns 13.5 acres, of which 12 acres are used for farming. On 11 of these 12 acres, there is a dense forest of subbool (Australian Agesia) which is a type of fodder for the animals and a good source of wood. Only one acre is used for agricultural purposes.

When asked if these plants harm the crops, Raju replies, “Not at all,” adding, “The roots of these plants and trees run deep, thus strengthening the soil.” It is natural to assume that no-till farming is tough. People usually tend to disbelieve the methods adopted as part of natural farming. But seeing Raju's farm, those sceptics come away convinced. ( Charkha Features)
