पुआल,नरवाई आदि जिन्हे किसान जला  देते हैं या खेतों से बाहर कर देते हैं को वापस खेतों में जहाँ से लिया है वहीं वापस फेलाने  से मिट्टी की संरचना में सुधार आता है  है और मिट्टी की उर्वरता बढ़ती है उससे तैयार किए गए उर्वरकों की जरूरत नहीं रह जाती। मगर, बेशक इसका उपयोग बिना-जुताई वाली खेती में ही फलदायी होगा। केवल मेरे खेत ही सारे जापान में ऐसे हैं, जिनमें बीस साल से भी ज्यादा समय से हल-बखर नहीं चलाया गया है, और हर मौसम के साथ उनकी गुणवत्ता में सुधर आया है। मेरा अनुमान है कि इन बीस बरसों में मिट्टी  की ऊपरी सतह, कोई चार इंच की गहराई तक, जैविक खाद से समृद्ध हो गई है। इसका सबसे बड़ा कारण यही है कि इन खेतों में जो कुछ उगा वह अनाज को छोड़कर, सब-का-सब, खेतों को ही लौटा दिया गया है।

 Scattering straw maintains soil structure and enriches the earth so that prepared fertilizer becomes unnecessary. This, of course, is connected with non -cultivation. My fields may be the only ones in Japan, which have not been ploughed for over twenty years, and the quality of the soil improves with each season. I would estimate that the surface layer, rich in humus, has become enriched to a depth of more than four inches during these years. This is largely the result of returning to the soil everything grown in the field but the grain itself.
